Choosing the right seat for your car is very important
Every year over 1,200 children are killed or injured on the roads of Great Britain whilst travelling in cars*
In September 2006 the Government passed a law which makes it an offence for children under 12 years of age or 135cms (approx 4’5”) in height to travel in a car without the appropriate restraint.
The ‘Groups’ list in the left column on this page will explain the groups to help you determine the appropriate restraint for your child
Once you have decided on the correct group for your child’s weight and age, the next step is to choose a seat that will fit your car. The ‘Universal’ tag on the side of a seat refers to a Universal Safety Standard and NOT that it will fit into any car!
The only way you can be sure it fits is to try it in your car before you buy it.
The In Car Safety Centre is staffed by trained Road Safety personnel who give consistent, independent advice on the best seat for your needs.
We are open on Fridays (excluding Good Friday and other recognised holidays) between 9.30am and 2.30pm
The service is offered by Essex County Council and is completely FREE so there is
no reason why you should not take advantage of it. No appointment is necessary -
